Why you should only use an Oral Surgeon to remove your Wisdom Teeth

When you are choosing a medical provider for the removal of wisdom teeth there are multiple options, including general dentists, dental clinics specializing in wisdom teeth removal and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. It is important for you to understand that not all medical providers undergo the same training in order to offer this service.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the only dental specialists who are recognized by the American Dental Association as qualified oral and maxillofacial surgical specialists. Every oral surgeon has received at least 4 years of extensive surgical training in a hospital-based surgical residency program and their training focuses almost exclusively on the hard (i.e., bone) and soft (i.e., skin, muscle) tissue of the face, mouth, and jaws. This makes them uniquely qualified to address functional and esthetic condition in this area of your face.

In addition, oral surgeons have received training alongside medical residents in emergency medicine, anesthesiology, general surgery, plastic surgery, internal medicine, and other specialty areas. When undergoing any procedure involving anesthesia, it is extremely important to ensure that your medical provider is able to address any complications that may arise.

There are many doctors out there operating as if they are oral surgeons or that they perform many procedures. For example, there is an ad in Provo, Utah, that says, right under the name of the practice, “General Dentistry, Oral Surgery, Sedation, and Orthodontics,” but in small letters on the bottom right of the ad it states, “All services performed by licensed general dentists.” The ad also shows in bold letters, “Wisdom Teeth,” “Dental Implants,” and even “Orthodontics.”  If you wanted braces, wouldn’t you go to an orthodontist? The bottom line is, if you are in need of any oral surgical procedure, particularly wisdom tooth removal, oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the best and most qualified providers to perform your surgery.

“The best and cheapest dentistry is when the right thing is done extremely well the first time and it lasts.”

The same goes for our specialists here at Wisdom Teeth by Specialists, and we understand doing it right “the first time.”
